NIA completes implementation of Laya West irrigation project

The National Irrigation Administration through its Kalinga Irrigation Management Office (IMO) has completed implementation of the Laya West Communal Irrigation Project (CIP) and is currently being utilized by the farmers in Brgy. Laya West, Tabuk City, Kalinga.

With fund source from the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program-Irrigation Component (CARP-IC) of the Department of Agrarian Reform, Laya West CIP was implemented in two phases.

The project’s Phase 1 was completed in 2019, generating an initial area of 55 hectares. It had a project cost of P10 million where major facilities constructed include a diversion weir, intake, sluiceway and a 654-meter irrigation canal. These facilities were turned-over to the Jose Anniban Farmers Irrigators Association, Inc. in December 2019 for operation and maintenance.

Meanwhile, the Laya West CIP Phase 2 started implementation in May 2020 and was declared completed in January 2021. With a project cost of P18.5 million, it generated an additional area of 78 hectares. This phase 2 enabled the construction of 1.586-kilometer main canal and lateral canals with a total length of 2.292 kilometers, and other canal structures such as road/thresher crossings, check gates and lateral gates.

In total, Laya West CIP Phase 1 and Phase 2 generated a total area of 133 hectares benefitting a total of 76 farmers. Facilities of the phase 2 of the project will soon be turned over to the Irrigators’ Association for Operation and Maintenance.
