In a pioneering move towards better collaboration, the DPWH and NIA converged in 2023 for the improvement of service roads of national irrigation systems in the Cordilleras.

From the proposed list of NIA, the DPWH district engineering offices completed the concreting of service roads of the Abra River Irrigation System (ARIS), West Apayao Abulug Irrigation System (WAAIS), and Upper Chico River Irrigation System (UCRIS) in 2023.

Amounting to a total of P25.6 million, these convergence projects were pipelined under ‘Katubigan’ program of the DPWH. This is in line with the instruction of President Bongbong Marcos to the two agencies for infrastructure projects that aim to prevent flooding in the irrigation systems, protect irrigation facilities and service areas from erosion and institute climate change adaptation works.

NIA-CAR officials headed by NIA-CAR Regional Manager Benito Espique, Jr. pose for posterity after the completion of the NIA-CAR Gear-up Wall as part of ushering in the new year on January 8, 2024.

Keeping up with the NIA tradition of ushering in the new year through a ceremony, NIA-CAR joins the NIA family nationwide in ushering in CY 2024 through the Gear-up Wall in ceremonial puzzle, symbolizing unity and harmony of all NIAns.

After the flag raising ceremonies on January, 8, 2024, heads of offices and representatives of the rank-in-file employees took turns in installing the gears, in Philippine flag colors of blue, red, yellow and white, to form the shape of the Philippine map.

The NIA Gear-up Wall is a visual representation of the collective community, utilizing new research and technologies to elevate irrigation services to its beneficiaries.

Two units of the seven modern backhoes distributed for CAR arrived at the Kalinga Irrigation Management Office in December 2023, as received by the KIMO management staff headed by Acting Division Manager Ferdinand Indammog (in green collared shirt). 73 irrigators worked on the main canal clearing of the Upper Chico River Irrigation System (UCRIS) in Tabuk City, Kalinga for the TUPAD towards better irrigation service.

Members of Irrigators’ Associations in the region receive a total of P910,000.00 as payout for the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) as part of the convergence initiatives of the NIA with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

A total of 160 irrigators in Abra, Ifugao and Kalinga worked on maintenance (canal clearing) of the main canals of the national irrigation systems which was contracted for the TUPAD implementation.

Another irrigation system was officially turned over to farmers’ group in Kiangan, Ifugao for operation and maintenance after the ceremonial turnover and acceptance ceremony held in Brgy. Baguinge, Kiangan, Ifugao on October 27.

The Hahlin Communal Irrigation System (CIS) located in Brgy. Baguinge, Kiangan will now be operated and maintained by the Hahlin Irrigators Association, Inc.
