UCRIS PAP train on livelihood

Thirty-three members of the project affected households of the Upper Chico River Irrigation System (UCRIS) are now more ready and have gained more self-reliance to embark on their own livelihood endeavors after attending the series of trainings as part of the Livelihood Assistance Program for the project affected people (PAP) .

Engr. Benito T. Espique, Jr. is the newly designated Acting Regional Manager of the National Irrigation Administration-Cordillera Administrative Region (NIA-CAR) as per NIA Office Memorandum No. 55 effective August 1, 2017. This is relative to the retirement of Engr. John Socalo, outgoing regional manager of NIA-CAR, who turned 65 on August 4, 2017.

Free irrigation starts this year

President Rodrigo Duterte’s promise of free irrigation service for farmers started this year.

This developed as P2 billion was provided in the budget of NIA in the General Appropriations Act of 2017 or RA 10924 as subsidy in lieu of the irrigation service fees (ISF) being collected from farmers being served by national irrigation systems (NIS).

Two decades ago, camote was the food staple of the residents of Brgy. Tukucan in Tinoc, Ifugao. It was the most practicable crop to plant due to the topography and soil type in the area. There was no road then, so there was no market for their camote products. It was only for the village’s consumption. According to Barangay Captain Joseph Calabson, rice was only served during special occasions and rituals.
