Irrigation project breaks ground in Kapangan, Benguet

NIA-CAR Regional Manager, Engr. Benito T. Espique Jr., leads the laying of the time capsule for the Pinaljok Communal Irrigation Project (CIP) together with Kapangan Acting Mayor Mayo Eslay (Vice-Mayor), Ms. Virginia Aycud, Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) of DAR-Benguet, representatives from the provincial government of Benguet, municipal councilors and farmer-beneficiaries during its groundbreaking ceremony on May 26, 2021.

Kapangan, Benguet — Twenty-one irrigator-farmers of Brgy. Datakan in this town will soon benefit from an irrigation project after its simple groundbreaking ceremony conducted by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) on May 26, 2021. 

With budget allocation of P3.7 million, Pinaljok Communal Irrigation Project (CIP) funded under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program – Irrigation Component (CARP-IC) 2021 will now begin construction and is expected to irrigate 14 hectares of land.

Engr. Benito Espique, Jr., Regional Manager of NIA Cordillera Administrative Region pledged full support of the agency in the project implementation and urged the farmer-beneficiaries, local government units and other stakeholders to help in the monitoring and implementation so that the project will be completed on time and as planned.

The project’s main features include the construction of a diversion weir with dimensions of 2.4 meters by 6.4 meters, pipelines, pumphouse and pump set and eight reservoir tanks.

Kapangan Acting Mayor, Hon. Mayo Eslay (Vice-Mayor) expressed gratitude in the construction of the project as he mentioned that there are still many areas in the municipality of Kapangan in need of irrigation services.

The project will be turned over to the the Pinaljok – Duhot Waterwork ni Umili Gardeners Association, Inc. in Datakan, Kapangan, Benguet after completion.

Mr. Dione Tonged, President of the Pinaljok – Duhot Waterwork ni Umili Gardeners Associaiton, Inc., also thanked NIA and DAR for the irrigation project and committed that the association will provide support during the implementation of the project.

NIA is the implementing arm of DAR in its CARP – Irrigation Component funded projects for its Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs). For CY 2021, there are seven CARP-IC funded projects in the region.

Meanwhile, there are 27 projects in Benguet this 2021 with a total allocation of P88.85 million.
