Big-ticket project soon to irrigate 1,200 hectares in Apayao

Pudtol, Apayao - Over 1,200 hectares of land will soon be irrigated in Apayao and about 650 farmers are expected to benefit with the ongoing construction of a big irrigation project in the province.

The Lower Apayao River Irrigation System (LARIP) in Apayao is a multi-year big-ticket project of the National Irrigation Administration with an estimated project cost of Php 990M. It is set to irrigate six barangays in Pudtol – Aurora, Lt. Balag, Mataguisi, Aga, Malibang and Cacalaggan and one barangay in Flora – Upper Atok.  

The project office of LARIP which was completed in 2020 is located at Brgy. Lt. Balag, Pudtol, Apayao.

According to Engr. Samuel C. Bahiwag, Acting Division Manager of Apayao Irrigation Management Office (AIMO), the big-ticket project includes construction of 27 drainage structures, around 29 canal structures, 17-kilometer canalization and three-kilometer pipeline.

The construction of irrigation and drainage infrastructures will provide dependable supply of irrigation water and increase agricultural production, Engr. Bahiwag added.

Engr. Benito T. Espique, Jr., NIA-CAR Regional Manager, stressed that the project’s completion is expected to increase farmers’ income and upgrade their standard of living.
